Class of Her Own is Coming to EMU!
The Department of Africology and African American Studies (AAAS), in collaboration with the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), the College of Education (COE) and the Ann Arbor Black Film Festival presents
Class of Her Own
--a eye-opening, spellbinding documentary about transformative teaching and learning
Gloria Jean Merriex was a typical teacher at Duval Elementary (East Gainesville, Fla.). After her school flunked its high-stakes state exam, the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT), she made a change for herself and her students.
She created a curriculum from scratch to make her lessons relevant to her entire class. Recognizing that rhythm and repetition help children grasp and remember complex concepts, she flipped the education playbook and started the school year with the hardest concepts, substantially raising her expectations of her students—and herself. Her actions Catapulted Duval to an A and gave us a blueprint for student success.
When: September 10, 2024, 4:00pm to 6:00pm, EST
Where: Ballroom, Eastern Michigan University Student Center
